Description and Alaskan Malamute HistoryMalamutes have been known as one of the largest and oldest sled dogs of the Artic. They were named for the Inuit Tribe in Alaska. Alaskan Malamutes were used by the Inuit Eskimos to help track large game and serve as sled dogs. They doubled as the family pet, guard dog and served as a nanny to the Inuit children. My malamutes will get curious if my children run off and try to see that they are safe. If my kids fight the malamutes fuss at them. It is so cute and I appreciate the help. Sometimes the kids listen to them better, lol!
The Alaskan Malamute was first recognized by the AKC in 1935. They have great strength and endurance. They are in the Spitz family and working class known to carry large loads over long distances. Alaskan Malamutes are often called "Gentle Giants". They may look similar to the Husky, but they are a lot bigger and more powerful. The malamutes were used at the back of the line when pulling the sled so they would handle most of the weight. Huskies are a bit more hyper or energetic so they were put in the front to help with speed. They both are very intellegent dogs. The malamute tends to be quieter and calmer. Physical Appearance Typical Standard Size Females: 22-24 inches tall and 70-85 pounds Males: 24-26 inches tall and 80-95 pounds It is common to see heavier malamutes (90 - 100+ lbs) and smaller malamutes less than 75 pounds. Giant Malamutes Giant size is not something usually noted by AKC. Breeders even have their own definition of what a Giant Malamute is defined. Most say anything over 100 pounds. Giant malamutes are not overweight standards. They typically are taller and longer than the standard size malamute as well as heavier in weight. Build Alaskan Malamutes are substantially built dog with a deep chest and strong, well-muscled body. Coat Alaskan Malamutes have a double coat. Undercoat: Oily and woolly texture that can be as thick as two inches. Outer Guard Coat: Thick and coarse; stands off the body; longer at the withers, but not more than one inch off the sides of the body. Never long and soft. The malamute is known for superb adaptation to its environment. Thier coat protects them from rain and snow. We have found that our malamutes adjust to the summer heat. In the summer months their coat is shorter and less dense. Colors Various shades of gray and white, sable and white, black and white, seal and white, red and white, or solid white Markings Face markings are a distinguishing feature. (Masks, blazes, a splash at the nape of the neck, and a collar or half collar) Head The head is broad and deep. Not coarse or clumsy, but in proportion to the size of the dog. Facial expression is soft and indicates an affectionate disposition. Eyes Almond-shaped eyes that are varied shades of brown. The darker eye is preferred. Ears Triangular ears that are small in proportion to the head and stand firmly erect when at attention. Muzzle Deep and broad; not pointed or long, yet not stubby. Tail Plume like tail that is well furred and carried over the back. Health Average lifespan is 10-15 years. Most Commonly Reported Health Problems: musculoskeletal (hip dysplasia) and hereditary cataracts Temperament Affectionate, Playful, Devoted, Loyal, Friendly, Dignified, They can be very good with kids and other animals if socialized properly at a young age. These dogs are very loving. They love affection and will demand it. They will put their head in your lap and won't leave you alone until you pet them, and pet them until they are satisfied. They crave affection. Pack Animals Alaskan Malamutes are pack animals and you have to understand that you are part of their pack. They need a sense of where they fit into the pack. Please make sure you get alpha training. Learn as much as you can about this role. The alpha dog eats first and they are the leader of the pack. Everyone must obey the alpha dog and follow its lead. Do not let your malamute take on the alpha role in your household. This is something you must learn to do in order for your malamute to learn to obey you. Make sure you assume the alpha role from the start of your relationship. Play Never let your Alaskan Malamute puppy bite you or crawl on top of you. This can teach them to become aggressive and makes them the more dominant. Remember to maintain the alpha role. Lay puppies on their back and gently hold them in that position as you stroke their bellies. This will help show your dominance. If you learn how to maintain the alpha role you can have a very loyal mal. Living Conditions Alaskan Malamutes need a lot of exercise so they will need a large yard to run. They are not good apartment pets. This is too cramped of an environment for them and they will not make your neighbors very happy when they start howling.
